Jitsi meetings in general operate in 2 ways: peer-to-peer (P2P) or via the Jitsi Videobridge (JVB). This is transparent to the user. P2P mode is only used for 1-to-1 meetings. In this case, audio and video are encrypted using DTLS-SRTP all the way from the sender to the receiver, even if they traverse network components like TURN servers. ////I know this looks like every other virtual choir video, but this was recorded live.////To see a post production version with the 30ms time shift to align. Key features of Jitsi Meet Encrypted communication (secure communication): As of April 2020, 1-1 calls use the P2P mode, which is end-to-end encrypted via DTLS-SRTP between the two participants. Group calls also use DTLS-SRTP encryption, but rely on the Jitsi Videobridge (JVB) as video router, where packets are decrypted temporarily.
You can use Jitsi Meet API to create Jitsi Meet video conferences with a custom GUI.
Installation
To embed Jitsi Meet API in your application you need to add Jitsi Meet API library
Now you can access Jitsi Meet API trough the JitsiMeetJS
global object.
Getting Started
- The first thing you must do in order to use Jitsi Meet API is to initialize
JitsiMeetJS
object:
- Then you must create the connection object:
- Now we can attach some listeners to the connection object and establish the server connection:
- After you receive the
CONNECTION_ESTABLISHED
event you are to create theJitsiConference
object andalso you may want to attach listeners for conference events (we are going to add handlers for remote track, conference joined, etc. ):
- You also may want to get your local tracks from the camera and microphone:
NOTE: Adding listeners and creating local streams are not mandatory steps.
- Then you are ready to create / join a conference :
After that step you are in the conference. Now you can continue with adding some code that will handle the events and manage the conference.
Components
Jitsi Meet API has the following components:
JitsiMeetJS
JitsiConnection
JitsiConference
JitsiTrack
JitsiTrackError
Usage
JaaS customers, please checkout this example: https://github.com/saghul/sandbox-html/tree/main/jaas-ljm. Live: https://bettercallsaghul.com/sandbox-html/jaas-ljm/

- boolean property (default false). Enables use of turn over udp for jvb. It is disabled because not very useful (if the client can use udp, it likely can connect to jvb directly over udp too; but it can be useful to still enable udp turn when an udp turn is known to be whitelisted on a network)disableH264
- DEPRECATED. UsedisabledCodec
instead.preferH264
- DEPRECATED. UsepreferredCodec
instead.
JitsiMeetJS.JitsiConnection

MeetrixIO team is well experienced with WebRTC related technologies. We provide commercial support for Jitsi Meet, Kurento, OpenVidu, BigBlue Button, Coturn Server and other webRTC related opensource projects.
Although Jitsi Meet is fairly easy to setup, you might find some issues when trying to setting it up behind corporate firewalls. Please follow our Jitsi Meet and Firewallspost first to get an understanding on how Jitsi Meet works with ports.
If you have tried everything to get Jitsi Meet work behind your firewall and nothing works, you can try to setup a Turn server. In this article, we will seup Coturn to work with Jitsi Meet.
Setting up Coturn
You can follow our How to Setup Coturn article and setup coturn with Time-Limited Credentials Mechanism
and with SSL
. You would have a coturn configuration file similar to the following one.
Configuring Prosody
First we need to download and install mod_turncredentials.lua
to prosody
Then in your prosody config,
After that, we have to enable mode_turncredentials
in our virtual host. Like this
once you are done, restart the prosody server.
Jitsi Meet Config
Usage

For the JVB, there are two use cases of a Turn Server.Hence there are two places in Jitsi Meet configuration where we have to configure useStunTurn
Using Turn for p2p connections
If the video bridge fails to establish p2p connections between two participants, we can establish the p2p connection through the Turn Server. To do this, we need to set useStunTurn: true
in p2p
settings of Jitsi Meet configurations.
Using Turn Server with JVB
By setting useStunTurn: true
and setting org.jitsi.videobridge.DISABLE_TCP_HARVESTER=true
on JVB (using sip-communicator.properties
file), we can turn off the TCP Harvester of JVB and use the Turn Server for TCP connections. With this method, JVB will only be uing UDP. If a participant fails to establish a UDP connection with the bridge, TURN server will establish a TCP connection with the participant and then will relay the media traffic over UDP to the bridge.
Special thanks : Damian Minkov of Jitsi Team.
